Antalya-Perge

An important city of ancient Pamphylian, Perge (11 miles from Antalya) was originally settled by the Hittites around 1500 B.C. St. Paul preached some of his first sermons there.

The theater's stage has finely carved marble reliefs and other carvings from around the city, displayed in the stadium. Amateur archaeologists will want to see the handsome city gate flanked by two lofty towers, a long colonnaded road once paved with mosaics and lined with shops, a large agora, public baths and a gymnasium.

After discovering Perge, the next place definitely worth visiting is the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography, situated on the Western outskirts of Antalya, a 35-minutes drive away. The collection in the museum is displayed in exemplary fashion. The large archeological section offers an excellent survey of the great periods in Pamphylia's history, starting from the Neolithic Age, then the Bronze Age up to the Hellenistic and Roman times, including statues of divinities.
